Summer Camp 2003

During the week of August 3rd, Troop 201 attended annual Summer Camp at Camp Merz in Mayville, NY. During Summer Camp, scouts come from all over to work on merit badges, compete in different camp contests, and just have a fun time. We were lucky enough to stay with a couple of provisional scouts from Troop 253 of Grand Island, NY. Over the course of the week, events were held, such as the Water Carnival, Outpost Night, and Hawaiian Luau Night. The Water Carnival is a yearly event that takes place on the camp's dock on Lake Chautauqua. It includes such events as 'Styro-Fishing', 'Sandwich Run', 'Leader's Cannonball', and the near-infamous 'Greased Watermelon'. On Wednesday, Outposts were held to help scouts complete merit badge requirements away from the campsites. The Outposts included hiking for the Camping merit badge, and boating across the lake for the water related badges. The Hawaiian Luau was held in the parade field, in front of the camp's Dining Hall. events in the Luau included a Limbo Stick contest, a food eating contest, and a Hawaiian Princess beauty pageant. At the end of the week, Camp closed with two large campfires and a series of skits done by the different troops that were in attendance. See some pictures of the week. It was a fun week, and a welcome addition to the scouts' summers.
